Ok firs have them play knock out. Dribble knock out. teach em how to dribble as low as they can go. teach em how to rebound. teach em how to shoot. got them in layup linesI am coaching 6, 7, and 8 year olds...any advice on how to coach them?
teach them all of the basic fundamentals...passing, lay-ups, dribbling, shooting, etc...don't have them run any big plays because they will probly get confused easily!
Keep it simple. Don't stress out about doing everything right. You want to make sure that they enjoy the experience. They have plenty of years to worry about doing everything right. If they don't enjoy it they won't come back.

As far as skills, I would work on dribbling, passing and catching, and introduce the concept of teamwork. Show them the proper way to shoot, but don't worry about if their technique isn't 100% correct.

make it fun for yourself as well. If you don't enjoy it, the kids will know.
First, I would suggest lots of ball handling and defensive drills. A player that can play defense and handle the basketball can be successful at almost any level. Second, I would recommend emphasizing the correct shooting form because your players are at an age where they develop terrible habits. Third, emphasize teamwork over winning. Practices improve players when they're based on getting better, not being competitive. Your players have hundreds of games ahead of them, don't emphasize the winning and losing just yet. And finally, make sure they're always having fun. Players that fall in love with basketball will want to make themselves better and be easier to coach in the future. Hope all goes well.
I agree with Bobby McG. Teach them the basics, then go from there. Get involved if you can. They will like it better if you are on the floor with them, not yelling from the sidelines. And have fun. If you do, they will. At this age, that is what it is about. Good luck
a big stick always helps....lol
