Have any advice how to exercise and limit weight gain during pregnancy?

Hello folks,

I'm pregnant for the first time and I've got some curiosities about weight gain and exercising.

Before I became pregnant, I lost a lot of weight, to my standards anyhow. I'm 5'4 and was 195 and worked my but off in six months got to 160, still 30 pounds from my weight loss goal. However, I exercised a lot and learned to watch my diet. During the first three months of my pregnancy (I'm now 16 weeks) I couldn't exercise because any swift movement made me want to vomit, I was that sensitive. And as any pregnant lady knows, my first instincts to eat healthy went out the window. I'm already at 179 pounds again. I still have about 5 months of this pregnancy to go, and I don't want to be on a run away train any longer. I want to know how do I curb this? I think I've put on enough weight, can I reduce the calories I'm eating, still eat 300 plus a day for the baby on top of a regular healthy diet and lose weight? I just honestly want to be fit, and I'm terrified of getting back to the 190's.

If any one has any advice about exercising during pregnancy, how to curb this seemingly out of control weight gain, or anything that might help me a long, I'd appreciate it. As a new mom to be, I'm finding the resources are limited for pregnancy health in terms of fitness. I don't want to be so out of shape that it takes me the next couple years to get to my goal of 130 pounds.

Thanks everyone,

First of all I want to commend you on your weight loss prior to your pregnancy and your concern now. It's not something a lot of moms to be and their drs are not comfortable talking about.

Your probably know that now is not the time to lose weight or start some crazy exercise program. Aerobic exercise is not only safe, but it is recommended in pregnancy. Walking, running (if comfortable), elliptical machines are all good forms of exercise. You should try to keep your heart rate below 140/ be able to maintain a conversation while exercising.

In terms of eating but keeping within the 300 extra calorie recommendation try increasing your friut and veggie intake. They have lots of good stuff in them for you and the baby as well has helping you feel full.

The pyramid.gov site has a lot of info. You can even track and plan what you are going to eat for the day. It can also help figure out serving sizes. There is a section that specifically addresses pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Just eat healthy. Lots of fruit and veg. Dont snack between meals and take plenty of gentle exercise like swimming. That should help!
A lot of women who lose a lot of weight just before getting pregnant gain a lot of weight during their pregnancy. It's because their metabolism got all messed up through low-calorie dieting, and once they're pregnant, their body wants to avoid starvation for them and the baby, and will store a lot of fat.

You should not restrict calories during pregnancy, or while nursing, because it can cause life-long weight problems for your child. That isn't to say that you can just eat doughnuts and pie, though. You still have to make good food choices, but without restricting calories. You can't say to your body: ';this 1200 calories is for me, that 300 calories is for the baby.'; You have to flood your body with healthy calories, this will relax your body's ';survival'; system so your body doesn't think you're starving and will stop storing excess fat. During pregnancy, you could easily eat 2500 - 3000 calories a day, and 3000 - 4000 a day while nursing. I know this sounds crazy, with all the low-calorie, low-carb stuff that's out there right now, but it's the only way to get your metabolism to function properly and stop storing excess fat.

This book is where I get my information: ';Lean %26amp; Free 2000 Plus'; by Dana Thornock. You can get it used on amazon.com for under $5. It has common sense information that is good for everyone, little kids, pregnant and nursing moms, everyone. She also has a cook book. Really, this book could change your life and save you a lot of stress and worry, and the added bonus is that you will have a healthy pregnancy, and a very healthy, well-fed baby, and your body will be the right weight for you, attractive and slim. Please, check it out.

Good luck!
Why dont you try some safe exercising methods. Read following link. You will get ample of advise.
It is not a good idea at all to diet while pregnant so rather maintain a healthy diet and you shouldn't put on any excessive weight. remember healthy weight gain for a pregnancy is between 25 and 35 pounds.

As for exercising you would need to consult your doctor. There are some pregnancy exercises available on the net and in some places they even have pregnancy classes.

I specifically attend a company called Preggie Bellies which specialised in pregnancy exercise and it is like an aerobics workout. See if you have anything like this near you.

Also remember that if you breast feed you will also loose quite a lot of weight!

Good luck!
