Need some advice on how to go lighter with my hair?

i have really dark brown hair hence dark eyebrows but i really want to go lighter but my eyebrows just pop out really bad! i was thinking maybe like blond and like a red brown highlights on the bottom of my hair and then a darker brown highlights on the top of my hair? hmmm sorry if im not making any sense i just want to talk to people that know what they are doing!!!!Need some advice on how to go lighter with my hair?
